Fitting tribute
Smith’s legacy as the “father of modern economics” is beyond question but I am particularly struck by the enormous breadth of his influence, stretching far beyond these shores and across the world. When complete, the refurbished Panmure House will provide a lasting monument to Smith in the heart of Edinburgh’s historic Old Town, almost 240 years after the publication of his seminal work, The Wealth of Nations.
Once it is complete, I look forward to seeing this historic building realise its full potential as an appropriate venue for the sort of stimulating economic discourse and debate of which I am sure Adam Smith would be very proud.
By returning Panmure House to its former glory, Scotland pays a fitting tribute to one of its most influential sons.
